Well, I get this error message when I try to upload a picture into my posts. Here’s the error message I get:
Warning: mkdir(/home/alex/public_html/wp-inst/wp-content/blogs.dir/51/files/2006): Permission denied in /home/alex/public_html/wp-inst/wp-admin/admin-functions.php on line 1531
Unable to create directory /home/alex/public_html/wp-inst/wp-content/blogs.dir/51/files/2006. Is /home/alex/public_html/wp-inst/wp-content/blogs.dir/51/files writable? Back to Image Uploading
I hope this helps. Looks like the permissions are not set right.
Wow, I didn’t know Alex has all of this stuff on his private server?
thanks for the help,
Danny

I’m in the habit of us Flickr and other aps to put pictures on my blog. At least Flickr requires an API Endpoint. Any advice?
January 13th, 2006 at 8:08 pm
As I tried to work around my problem, I experienced the same one that Danny has. The only way I can get a picture into a post is by clicking the “Insert Picture” button in the post editor bar. Drag and drop did not work at all.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:09 pm
And while I’m tossing things out… I’ve noticed that sometimes when I try to ad a link to a small section of text (one word or so) the editor bar link button sometimes gives me a link creation box that is too small to use and un-scalable.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:12 pm
Parke, the API endpoint your blog is http://parke.voxtropolis.com/xmlrpc.php
Type of API endpoint is MetaWeblogAPI.
I was able to post a photo from Flickr to my blog without issue (http://breathefire.voxtropolis.com)
January 13th, 2006 at 8:13 pm
Danny or Parke, what OS/browser are you using for the photo uploads?
January 13th, 2006 at 8:14 pm
Parke,
We’ll note down the link creation box issue you saw and work to get it remedied.
January 13th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
Thanks for the API help and looking into the other issue.
I’m using Firefox 1.5 on an XP pro system

Vox support, thank you for serving us!

from our homepage, if we click on a user that has commented on our site or navigated to other blogs, there is no way to navigate back to our own site without just hitting that “back” button for the browser.
January 14th, 2006 at 12:55 am
I’m not especially familiar with the trackback feature, but I attempted to put enter a url for Alex’ recent post on multiculturalism from mine. Should I be seeing something on his page?
January 14th, 2006 at 12:57 am
There’s a link in that last post (mine). You may want to consider underlines or bold for links in general. Even those in my blog entry barely stand out without manual editing.
January 14th, 2006 at 12:58 am
Yoshikoyan,
Thank you for your comments. We’re volunteer at this point and working hard to make it the best it can be!
Regarding the link to get back to your homepage, this will be noted and added into the development path.
January 14th, 2006 at 1:09 am
Parke,
A ‘trackback’ is a way you can leave a link and blurb from your blog on someone elses blog.
Let me try to explain with a real example:
Alex writes a blog post.
You find the blog post.
You want to write about it too.
You write your blog post AND include the ‘trackback’ address you saw on Alex’s site.
You post your blog.
On Alex’s blog (usually above the comments, sometimes in the comments), a blurb from your first paragraph and a link to your site shows up on his blog.
Trackbacks are a way that users can continue a discussion somewhere else and let readers of the first blog come to your blog.
To grab the trackback address, hover your cursor over the link, right mouse click (ctrl-click for Mac users) and ‘Copy’ the link. You can then paste the trackback address into the blue ‘Trackbacks’ area when you are writing a new post.
Trackbacks are incredibly effective to get your blog listed in search ratings across the internet. It also helps people find your blog who have never been there before. Any blog on the internet that has trackback address you can send a trackback too (not just Voxtropolis addresses).
Hope that helps!

Parke,
Noted the request for links to be indicated in blog comments.
January 14th, 2006 at 1:33 am
And while I’m messing around… it may be wise to inform newer users that they need to modify their time setting on their blog. I changed mine and then realized I needed to manually adjust all my previous entries to be on track. It would be a pain to realize this a week or two out.
Thank you again for all your hard work folks. I’m tossing things out as I see them so I don’t forget, but take the time you need to live life.
January 14th, 2006 at 1:42 am
Parke,
This is exactly the kind of feedback we need. We’re trying to work through these items to make it easy as new users come onboard.
I’ll note down about the time setting for the blog to inform new users.

I tried to make this post on my Voxtropolis blog, but the Google video code wasn’t being accepted for some reason. (source)
January 14th, 2006 at 5:32 pm
Sorry this post.
January 14th, 2006 at 5:39 pm
Parke,
Did you get a specific error when you tried to post it? Can you send me the code you were trying to post to support@voxtropolis.com?
Thanks for working through the bugs with us!
January 14th, 2006 at 6:37 pm
Parke, I think you’re trying to insert object tags in the post and they have just been enabled. Please try again. Thanks.
January 14th, 2006 at 7:50 pm
A couple of things…
In a how-to on posting pics it would be good to note max width… I uploaded one 400 pixels wide that messed up the formatting of the page (sent the stuff on the right side menu to the bottom of posts). Reloading the pic at 300 pixels wide worked fine. Same thing happens on Blogger… I want us to be better.
I still get a script error when loading pics but I can click thorugh it and they still load.
I can’t get “hard breaks” on my posts… ie: no vertical spacing between paragraphs. Even editing the html and adding ” had no effect. Any thoughts?
January 14th, 2006 at 7:54 pm
between the ” of my last post was ‘br br’.
Greg
January 14th, 2006 at 8:01 pm
Thanks for that…we’ll make sure that information is included on the HowTo.
Will get back to you re other issues.
January 14th, 2006 at 8:03 pm
Greg,
Good note on the image width.
January 14th, 2006 at 8:04 pm
Greg,
Are you doing for page breaks? (no spaces there)
January 14th, 2006 at 8:14 pm
In order to get the intuitive looking vertical breaks I wanted I had to scrap the div tags entirely and use paragraph tags in the html. So I want paragraph breaks I guess, as opposed to page breaks that you mentioned.
Hitting enter a few times when drafting the post seems to just add div tags in the html… which didn’t seem to create vertical spacing I was anticipating. Is there keystrokes that will generate different vertical spacing tags? ctrl-enter? shift-enter? I don’t want to edit html every time I post!!
Greg
January 14th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
What web browser are you using, Greg?
January 14th, 2006 at 8:42 pm
Greg,
We’ll note it down for review. In the meantime have you tried a <br> to force the paragraphs?
January 14th, 2006 at 8:43 pm
IE 6.0.2900.2180.etc, etc
January 14th, 2006 at 8:46 pm
yep… tried the break tags before I tried the paragraph tags but didn’t work… I was using them in conjunction with the div tags at that point though so that could have been why.
January 14th, 2006 at 8:51 pm
Just typing in the break tags as I write the post (as opposed to editing the html) works fine for now… thanks for the tip!
Greg
January 14th, 2006 at 9:04 pm
Now everything seems to work normally with just hitting enter?!?!
I do notice now that the path indicator on posts that I’ve been testing spacing with say ‘path: p’ under the posting box as opposed to ‘path: div’ which I had on the post that gave me grief. Not sure what I did to get path: div one time and path: p subsequent times?

different issue:
I notice when inserting a hyperlink into a post that the dialogue box gives me an option of opening the link in a new window instead of the existing one… but I can’t get it to work… or am I not understanding what it means by opening the link in a new place?
Greg
January 14th, 2006 at 9:48 pm
I’ve just checked this and am having the same result. Thanks for pointing it out. We’ll look to get it sorted.
January 15th, 2006 at 12:12 pm
Thanks for allowing the object tags. I’m now part way there. I can see it come up correctly in the editor, but when I post the code is stripped out somehow (as in completely gone when I go back to edit it.)
Here is an example of the code:
I intentionally broke this code so it wouldn’t work in the comments. The object tag slash should of course be in the end tag and not in the beginning.
January 15th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Or maybe not. Seriously though, just go to any Google video like the link below and look to the side where you’ll see “Put on Site”. When you click that you’ll see the code for the given video.
January 18th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
parke,
I was able to insert the google video in my blog (http://edko.voxtropolis.com). I turned off the visual rich editor and dumped the following code
January 18th, 2006 at 8:12 pm
hold on…i see that it’s not working again. let me take a look at this.
January 18th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
to embed google video use the following:
[gv data="url" width="400px" height="326px"][/gv]
January 19th, 2006 at 1:24 pm
I get the same errors uploading pics as well. Can we get a step by step how to on this as well? I’ve tried it on both firefox and IE.
January 19th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
Lon, you shouldn’t still be getting those error messages, but if you are please get back to us using the contact us form (under “Need Help?” in the right hand panel) and paste in the error code you’re getting.
The picture function is still not yet working as we want it to and is being improved. Also, we will be including an adding pictures HowTo very soon.
Thanks.

Why, when I create new link categories, do they not show up on my blog? Everything keeps going into the category of blogroll. Can you help me?
February 9th, 2006 at 7:47 pm
Hi Adria,
Unfortunately the link categories to not work with the Bike theme. To have your links broken down into categories, you will need to use one of the other ones that are available.
March 6th, 2006 at 3:41 am
Is there a way we could see the “development path” that you mentioned so we don’t give suggestions you are already planning on implementing and whatnot? If not, thats cool too. Thanks.
March 7th, 2006 at 7:21 am
I have been able to paste code from youtube before to show my videos…now it isn’t working. I turned off the visual rich editor but still no video. I finally pasted a link to it on my blog. Does it only work with certain VoxScapes or does it just not work?
Thanks,
Deana

Are we going to be able to “subscribe” to other bloggers sites, so we can keep track of who we would like to visit on an ongoing basis, or do we just hunt for links through comments? Is there a way to have a list of links that I want to save in a bar on the side of my page or something? And how do I make a “page”? Keep in mind I don’t speak “techie”.
March 22nd, 2006 at 10:18 pm
I’m still having problems with my layout. For some reason, my site menu either appears at the top or the bottom of my page, depending on which vox-scape I use. I thought the problem was with my browser, but others with the same voxscape don’t do that. I also have some pages on mine that come up right. What gives?
March 22nd, 2006 at 10:54 pm
Bishop,
I suspect your pic in your “Christian Thomas Lee is coming…” post is the culprit. Too wide perhaps. pics over a certain width screw up the layout. 300 pixels wide is safe. If it’s not the pic then I don’t know.

I’m unable to upload a picture. Any advice?

I have been dying to know what the “Build a Village” section is going to be about within the vox cafe. Any hints for us?

Do you guys think you will be developing a export/import tool for posts from another blogging platform (xanga/blogspot/etc.)? Thanks

Today I received a lot of bogus comments. What is the easiest way to keep that from happening? I have the letter code box set up, but that isn’t working. Any help?
July 13th, 2006 at 9:33 am
Jason, we are aware some spam comments getting through and are working to get this resolved as soon as possible. Thanks for letting us know.
